Even though National City is considered to be “in the center of it all” because
of its proximity to downtown San Diego, the San Diego Bay, and the U.S.-
Mexico border, San Diego’s second oldest city still has a hometown
atmosphere. Incorporated in 1887, National City was originally part of the
26,000-acre El Rancho de la Nacion, which was purchased in 1868 by Frank
Kimball and his brothers Warren and Levi. They cleared lands, built roads,
constructed the City's first wharf and brought the railroad to the City. They
built a house that boasted of being the first modern house in San Diego with
its bathtub and hot running water. The city was advertised on the East Coast
as having the “best climate on earth”. Residents flocked out to avoid the cold
winters and built miles of tree-shaded streets and Victorian homes, many of
which remain today.
Today, National City homes range from single-family units to multi-family
units. One slightly raised hill has a large settlement of homes with great
views of the bay or the mountains to the east. Activities for National City
residents include a fishing pier, large parks, and a golf course. Sycuan Casino
and Resort in nearby El Cajon offers a resort with excellent golf and tennis.
National City is positioned for prosperity with its thriving binational region of
5 million consumers, transportation network and business industry and has
quietly has been preparing itself for glory. Business in National City is
booming. Bordering San Diego Bay, the city port handles shipping and
receiving of commercial goods, namely cars. The “Mile of Cars”, synonymous
with National City, corners the San Diego market on both volume of cars sold
and dollar sales. The city is home to more than 3,000 businesses from

owned operations to multimillion-dollar corporations.

The downtown area was revitalized with a $4 million public plaza, a new $18
million state-of-the-art public library, a $24 million award-winning
Southwestern College “Education Village”, a $9 million fire station, and the
newly expanded Westfield Plaza Bonita mall. National City has invested
more than $3.4 million in street improvements; $1.2 million in public park
enhancements and received a $1 million Safe Routes to School grant.
National City will continue its planning efforts and development of the west
side and bay front. The National City Marine Terminal, along San Diego Bay,
houses the largest navy installation on the Pacific and extends three miles
along the bay. National City is circled by interstates 5 and 805, and highways
54 and 15. The San Diego Trolley and the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS)
service National City seven days a week and conveniently connect the city to
