Rancho de los Penasquitos, is Spanish for “land of the little hills” or “cliffs” and
refers to the rugged palisades that line the rim of Los Penasquitos Canyon.
Thanks to the hilly terrain, each neighborhood in Rancho Peñasquitos is
distinct from the next, providing a feeling of privacy and peace.  s master-
planned community is surrounded by a canyon open space preserve offering
hiking, biking and equestrian trails. Rancho Peñasquitos is commonly known
as PQ and is located in zip code 92129.

The area is approximately 10,000 acres including Black Mountain Regional
Park with 51 percent designated for residential development; 34 percent is
designated for parks and open space; two percent is designated for
commercial space.  Black Mountain is the area's most visible landmark, rising
to 1,500 feet above the region. The hills and canyons separate the area from
the rest of the city and make it seem more country like than urban.  SR-56
bisects the area providing residents with easy access to the coast.

Rancho Peñasquitos is bordered:

•        On the north by Black Mountain Ranch and Rancho Bernardo
•        On the south by Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve and Mira Mesa
•        On the east by Carmel Mountain Ranch and Sabre Springs
•        On the west by Torrey Highlands and Del Mar Mesa.

Rancho Peñasquitos homes are built on the mesas and hills. The majority are
typical middle class suburban homes although some custom homes do exist in
the area.  Many homes have spectacular views of undeveloped countryside.
There are a few condominiums and townhomes. The neighborhoods are quiet,
well-maintained and many young families choose to move to this community,
as it is considered one of the best places for families with kids to live.

The Poway Unified School System, considered one of the best in San Diego
County, provides the education for the area.  Sports leagues and recreational
activities are numerous and well-attended.  At one point, Rancho Penasquitos
had the largest Little League in the country.  While there is not a lot of
commercial development in the area, there are several small shopping areas
that provide services.  Residents are also within easy striking distance of two
of the areas best shopping, Mira Mesa Boulevard and Carmel Mountain Plaza.

Native American history within the area dates back as far as 7,000 years ago.
Archeologists delight in the fact that remains of the prehistoric culture can still
be found. Rancho de los Peñasquitos was San Diego County's first Mexican
land grant. In 1823 4,243 acres was awarded to Captain Francisco María Ruiz,
a Commandant of the Presidio of San Diego. This area was at the eastern part
of the Los Penasquitos Canyon and extended into Sabre Springs and up to
Rancho Bernardo

State Route 56 traverses east-west through the central portion of the
community. Interstate 15 passes on the east side of Rancho Peñasquitos. Black
Mountain Road is the main North-South artery, and Carmel Mountain
Road/Rancho Peñasquitos Boulevard is the main East-West artery.
